Empower Hope Kenya

Where Hope Rises, Purpose Is Awakened, and Lives Are Restored

Empower Hope is a faith-based community development organization located in Githogoro, serving the urban informal settlements of Githogoro and Mji wa Huruma. We walk alongside youth, women, and children awakening resilience and restoring dignity through holistic programs that mentor, equip, and uplift.

Through vocational training, life skilling, and spaces of renewal, we activate purpose, open pathways to sustainable livelihoods, and nurture transformation that is spiritual, emotional, creative, and economic—a rhythm of rising, a reclamation of voice, and a regeneration of destiny.

Our Founding Story

The Beginning

The Beginning

In 2014, Bob Cook made his first trip to Kenya as an investment adviser. During his downtime, he wandered into a Nairobi slum an encounter that would change the course of his life. There, he met seven boys who invited him into their world of narrow alleys, cramped homes, and daily struggles for food, school, and safety. What struck him most was not their poverty, but their potential. Their resilience and hope were waiting for someone to believe in them.

How He Responded to the Problem

How He Responded to the Problem

That encounter planted a seed. Bob returned home with a conviction: true transformation does not come from handouts but from empowerment. He began small—listening, building relationships, supporting education, and creating safe spaces for mentorship. Each step deepened his commitment to walk alongside the community, not above it. Together with his wife Sharon, he worked intentionally to raise a Kenyan leadership team, ensuring that Empower Hope would be rooted in the community it served.

Today

Today

From those first seven boys, Empower Hope has grown into a trusted, locally led organization serving the informal settlements of Githogoro and Mji wa Huruma. Today, strong Kenyan leaders guide the work offering training, restoring dignity, and empowering families for generations. What began as one man’s encounter has become a movement of hope, proving that when dignity is restored, futures are rewritten.

The Challenge

In the informal settlements of Githogoro and Mji wa Huruma, young people face entrenched barriers to education, employment, and mentorship, despite Kenya’s national efforts. These communities—situated beside affluent Nairobi neighborhoods—struggle with:

– Overcrowding and poor sanitation
– Limited access to schools and vocational centers
– High unemployment and poverty
– Vulnerability to substance abuse, crime, and lack of mentorship
– Single mothers raising children without support
– Stigma and trauma linked to mental health
– Alcoholism eroding community stability
– Rising crime threatening safety and deepening marginalization

The Statistics Reflect This Reality:

~17% of youth in formal jobs across Africa

22% of youth are NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training)

67% youth unemployment in Kenya

35% of Kenya’s population is youth

Without contextually relevant, faith-anchored, skill-based interventions, this potential remains untapped, perpetuating cycles of poverty and exclusion.

Community Data (Estimated)

Young people (15–34): ~38% (4,560 individuals)

Single mothers: ~22% of households

Social Issues

26% of young people affected by mental health struggles
